‘Libcef.dll Is Missing’ Error? Chromium Embedded Framework Fix

What Is Libcef.dll?

Libcef.dll is a DLL file associated with the Chromium Embedded Framework. It is used to embed the open-source Chromium web browser into another application.

Who Wrote This Libcef.dll File?

Chromium is an open-source browser project from Google โ€“ itโ€™s basically the code behind its Chrome browser. In the projectโ€™s words:

chromium: Libcef.dll

Chromium is an open-source browser project that aims to build a safer, faster, and more stable way for all Internet users to experience the web. This site contains design documents, architecture overviews, testing information, and more to help you learn to build and work with the Chromium source code.

The Chromium Embedded Framework

chromium embedded framework: Libcef.dll

The Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF) is a separate open-source project that enables applications such as Adobe Acrobat, Minecraft and MATLAB to use this browser. In the words of the project:

The Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF) is an open-source software framework for embedding a Chromium web browser within another application. This enables developers to add web browsing functionality to their application, as well as the ability to use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create the application’s user interface (or just portions of it).

Is The Chromium Embedded Framework Safe?

The Chromium Embedded Framework is a reputable project and a significant number of major companies, and hence applications use CEF. The related Libcef.dll files should, therefore, be safe.

However, out of date dll files or similarly named files used to mask viruses can be an issue. A decent anti-malware program should pick these issues up.

Related Error Messages

Errors relating to Libcef.dll are more likely to be an issue for users than viruses. The following error message are often observed:

  • There was a problem starting C:WindowsSystem32Libcef.dll
  • Libcef.dll Could Not Be Found
  • Libcef.dll Is Missing

These errors are usually caused by:

  • Issues with the host
  • A recent Windows update which may cause the Logitech program to search in the wrong file location and so could not be found
  • An out of date Windows system32 libcef.dll file
  • Applications being loaded on an old machine
  • Too many programs being opened on a PC

It is common the find the Libcef.dll files in Task Manager too, which often causes concern.

How To Fix Libcef.dll and Chromium Embedded Framework Errors

The safest way to fix Libcef.dll errors is to reinstall the related application. This should reinstall the latest DLL files and fix any issues.

You may wish to uninstall the previous version first too โ€“ to be downloading to a โ€˜cleanโ€™ PC.

An alternative is download the missing file from the project repository of Github  โ€“ although this is very technical and should only be done by a developer.

The other common fix, which we do not recommend, is to use one of the many DLL download sites. Adding the file may not fix the problem as DLL errors are often more complex than a missing file (even if thatโ€™s the immediate error that is flagged).

In addition the files on these sites are often out of date, or even contain viruses, which could also cause problems.

Therefore, we recommend reinstalling the application using the offending dll file to fix any Libcef.dll error.
